With my first baby on the way I thought I would use it as a good excuse to ask for a new camera lens for my birthday. My lovely husband and parents gave me the Sony E 50mm f/1.8 lens I asked for. I’ve only taken a few quick shots but I look forward to playing more over the coming weeks.
Above was the first photo I took, I was amazed by the depth of field when the aperture was set at f 1.8. The distance of the curtain behind the couch from my husband’s head is a little over 30cm and here the background is beautifully blurred.
Photographing Chloe is interesting without zoom as she is not the most cooperative as she likes to move close to the camera. This lens requires more distance than the prime ‘pancake’ lens (which came with the Nex 5) for the whole figure to fit in the frame. Chloe likes to sit very close when she is told to sit for a photo.
The lens is perfect for portraiture with a fantastic shallow depth of field. I’ll mostly be photographing family, the dog, food, and art stuff (yes a broad term). Anyway, this is a prime lens, which means there is no zoom, so it will take some time to get the hang of it.
