I feel like the past few months have flown by since becoming pregnant.I have been staring atthe relief print I have been trying to finish so it can be submitted to the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize but I find myself preoccupied with anything related to the baby. However, my creative energy has not been redirected to purchasing baby things or other consumer based activities. Instead I have been designing the nursery, refinishing a dresser, as well as, designing pages for a baby book and pregnancy journal (both to be printed as photo books).
The walls have been painted but the white trees have not been painted. The trees will be important to knock back the intensely bright green, however I hope that the dark stained timber furniture will do the same.
The dresser has been in my husband’s family for about 30 years. It was used by his older sisters who used it in a don’t-touch-the-floor game, then by his granny who chewed the tops of the inset handles with her finger nails, and somewhere along the line the top of the dresser acquired some serious water marks. So this poor tired dresser needed some love, now as I am no expert carpenter I did my best to sand the veneer back. From looking at design blogs on a regular basis I have observed the trend of painting some parts of retro furniture and restaining other parts so I had a play in Photoshop with a few ideas.
The second design was the final decision as there was a good balance and I felt the white enamel top would be a better surface when it is used as a change table for the baby.
Both the baby book and pregnancy journal have just been started, so here is a preview of the first page of the baby book.
I am rather thankful that in a week I will be on a 2 week term break which will give me the time I need to finish my lino and finish the nursery. Thankfully I have already made a baby book for my sister so my version should be quicker to make (but will still be an on going project for over a year). The journal should progress well at the same time but I need to work on it regularly.
