My husband and I travelled to Croatia, which is my grandpa’s home country, a few months ago. Split was our first stop on our journey to Dubrovnik where I met my Croatian relatives for the first time. My grandpa left Croatia and never went back. I was the first (from his line) to return.
On our second day in Split I woke up incredibly early (jet lag). Oddly enough we were the only ones in the hostel that night so I wandered into the dorm room across from ours to catch a view of the Green Market at 5am. I was not surprised to see that so many of tiny fruit and veg ‘stalls’ run by older women as we saw so many homes on the bus from the airport to Split with small gardens. I assumed these women were there selling the excess produce from their gardens. I spotted this old lady from the window when I first peered out at the handful of people setting up. I ventured out around 6:30am to get some things for breakfast including a couple of tomatoes from this lovely lady for sandwiches later in the day.
